Hi everybody!

So recently I bought ThinkPad T40 with Pentium 1.5Ghz, and Radeon 7500. It work's on XP but I don't want it. I read on Lenovo page that Windows 98 (SE of Course) actually is/was supported. And here is my question will I be able to fully install it? Will the wireless work on it? I don't acutally care about Bluetooth but WLAN is the most important thing (I'm 100% sure that graphics would work).

Thanx in Adavnce of all the answers!

P.S. Yea Yea I know that's stupid idea, but I want it as my 'Retro' laptop. And no I don't want Windows XP ;)

The registry edit wasn't successful because the problem is that you don't have a driver for your network adapters. This suggests that whoever installed XP on this laptop did not use Lenovo's mechanism to restore the computer to its 'fresh from the factory' condition. Rather, XP was installed from a CD of some unknown source. You may or may not run into activation issues once you're able to connect to the Internet. That depends on whether you have a legitimate Microsoft product key for whatever edition of Windows XP is installed.

Where did the 'CDROM with WXP drivers' come from?

For your immediate problem, you need to get drivers from the Lenovo web site. You can do this using the computer that you're using to post questions here; just download the necessary drivers, copy them to a USB flash drive, and then bring the flash drive to the laptop to do the installation.

The generic Lenovo T40 driver download page is here --> http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t40

You would be better served, however, by determining the machine type and model from the label on the bottom of the Thinkpad. See http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/find-product-name#thinkpad This is generally 4 digits followed by 3 characters. Use the machine type and model on this page --> http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/search That should get you to a driver download page that has the drivers for the particular hardware in your specific machine.

I can't tell you what drivers may or may not have been installed by whoever installed XP in your machine. In general, you need to install at least the following drivers, usually in the following order:

Chipset driver

Audio driver

Video driver

Network interface driver (Ethernet)

Wireless network driver

Bluetooth driver

T40

Mouse/keyboard/touchpad/trackpoint driver

Power management driver

Other drivers for whatever additional hardware is installed in your computer.

The Lenovo download page includes ReadMe files for most, if not all, of the downloads. Read these files to help determine if you need to install a particular driver or software package. I suggest that you not install any firmware upgrades or patches until you get everything working properly.

If you are going to connect this laptop to the Internet -- and you should seriously consider NOT doing that because of the increasing vulnerability to malware of Windows XP -- after you get the network driver installed, you need to (a) install a good antivirus that will still work with Windows XP (I haven't kept track of which ones still do) and (b) install Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all subsequent critical Windows updates. See instructions for doing this below.

All of the Windows XP updates released prior to April 8, 2014, are available through Windows Update -- once service pack 3 has been installed (Windows Update will not work for XP pre-sp3).

Download Service Pack 3 -->

Ignore the text that says that it is for network installations as well as the advice to use Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.

Disconnect from the Internet. Disable (or preferably uninstall) your antivirus program if you have already installed one.

Run the downloaded SP3 installer. Reboot twice.

Reinstall (or install for the first time) or turn on your antivirus program. Connect to the Internet. Go to Windows Update. You probably will want to install the updates in batches, rebooting as necessary.

Or for a much faster process, consider slipstreaming service pack 3 together with all of the post-sp3 updates. See --> http://xdot.tk/
